Who Is Jesus?
Article 4 - Was Jesus Who He Claimed to Be?
by Bryan Gibson
Jesus claimed to be the Christ, the Son of God, the Savior of the world. Was he telling the truth, or was he an impostor? Let’s ask some people who knew him, some people who witnessed certain events in His life.
John the Baptist
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! …And John bore witness, saying, "I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him. I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God” (John 1:29, 32-34).
The Samaritans
And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, "He told me all that I ever did." …Then they said to the woman, "Now we believe, not because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard Him and we know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world” (John 4:39, 42).
Martha
Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?" She said to Him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world” (John 11:25-27).
The Centurion (and others who were guarding Jesus at the time of his crucifixion)
So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, "Truly this was the Son of God!" (Matthew 27:54).
Thomas
The other disciples therefore said to him, "We have seen the Lord." So he said to them, "Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe." And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, "Peace to you!" Then He said to Thomas, "Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing." And Thomas answered and said to Him, "My Lord and my God!" (John 20:25-28).
Proof Positive from Isaiah
If you are still not fully convinced, ask yourself how someone who lived well over 700 years before Jesus did could have such detailed knowledge of his life. Generally the Jews did not expect anyone like Jesus to be the Christ ... they were expecting another David. The words of Isaiah could not be just a lucky guess, and they can apply to no one else but Jesus. Note especially the reason for Jesus suffering, as we studied back in the last article. The following is proof positive that Jesus is exactly who he claimed to be. The following is from Isaiah 53:
1 Who hath believed our message? and to whom hath the arm of Jehovah been revealed?
2 For he grew up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.
3 He was despised, and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and as one from whom men hide their face he was despised; and we esteemed him not.
4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows; yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and Jehovah hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
7 He was oppressed, yet when he was afflicted he opened not his mouth; as a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and as a sheep that before its shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth.
8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who (among them) considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living for the transgression of my people to whom the stroke (was due)?
9 And they made his grave with the wicked, and with a rich man in his death; although he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.
10 Yet it pleased Jehovah to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see (his) seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of Jehovah shall prosper in his hand.
11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, (and) shall be satisfied: by the knowledge of himself shall my righteous servant justify many; and he shall bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he poured out his soul unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors: yet he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors."
All of the writers of the New Testament proclaimed that Jesus was a perfect man -- totally good and totally honest. Why would you doubt what Jesus said? Why would you doubt the testimony and witness of good and honorable men?
Finally, the New Testament clearly teaches that Jesus was from the beginning, an Eternal Being, and Divine in every way (John 1 and Philippians 2). John 8:58: Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was born, I AM. If you recall from the burning bush, "I AM" is the name that God gave to Moses for His name. It is no usurpation of divine power for Jesus to proclaim Himself to be divine in this way.
