Idioms
Finally, it is also important to explain that the word used for “hate” in Malachi 1 is a Hebrew idiom which actually means to “love less.” Norman Geisler explains: “This is evident from Genesis 29:30: The phrase ‘loved Rachel more than Leah’ is used as the equivalent of ‘Leah was hated’ (cf. also Matt. 10:37).” - See more at: http://www.toughquestionsanswered.org/2009/05/25/does-god-really-hate-esau/#sthash.LkRQ4pok.dpuf
Now, in English, the phrase Set His Face To Go makes no sense. We think it makes sense but only because we have discovered what it means. This phrase is an obvious example of a Hebrew idiom that found its way into the literal translation. It comes to us from the KJV translators and is over 400 years old. However, it is based on the earlier English translation of William Tyndale which is going on 500 years old. I do not think those people had any clear understanding of Hebrew idioms. Later translations give a clearer understanding in English. The following is from the NASV:
He was determined to go to Jerusalem… [1]
Young’s Literal Translation states, that he fixed his face to go on to Jerusalem.
Quite often Christians will attempt to convince others of the validity of the bible by scientific and historical evidences. While it is true that (apart from miracles) there are no scientific or historical biblical assertions that contradict valid science or history, this is not convincing evidence for three reasons. First, it is impossible to agree upon just what constitutes “valid” science and history. The best of both have their flaws, and so this is a process of comparing the word of God to imperfect writings and thoughts of men. Second, the bible itself, although quite understandable, is often popularly purported to say things that it just does not say. When people have a mind to believe such things, argumentation is futile (1 Corinthians 2).
A third problem is that biblical miracles are, by definition, supernatural events. Miracles must contradict that which is observed by men to be science or they would not be miracles. So proving them valid by means of science is paradoxical. Those who have attempted to validate the miracles on a scientific basis end up with the ironic position of disproving that the biblical miracles were supernatural. It is interesting to me, however, that in their endeavors to do this (trying to prove the Bible true), they never deny the truthfulness of the testimony or that the event actually happened. They just seem to think that giving a "scientific" explanation to it will some how increase our faith in the Bible; and hence the paradox. We become faith’s worse enemies when we explain away miracles scientifically. This is because the testimony of miracles (real supernatural events) is intended by the Holy Spirit to build faith (John 20:30-31, discussed further below).
